The official Homecoming Banquet for the Hebron Green Giants in 1952.
On the night of March 22, 1952, Hebron, with a population of 700, shocked Quincy, population 44,000, in overtime to win the Illinois State High School Basketball Championship in Champaign. Hebron’s student body only numbered 98.
In the championship game, Hebron beat Quincy 64-59 in overtime. Center Bill Schultz, who played with his ribs taped after suffering an injury in the semifinal contest, scored 24 points. The Green Giants outscored Quincy 6-1 in the overtime period to clinch the victory.
Hebron’s 1952 tournament victory was watched on television and listened on the radio but more than a million fans. Hebron won 35 out of 36 games losing only to Crystal Lake during the 1951-1952 season. They will forever remain the smallest high school to ever win the basketball crown in Illinois. In 1971, the IHSA (Illinois High School Association) rules changed so a small school like Alden-Hebron High School would play in a small school competition instead.
